Dialogue Between Jamison and Danielle Ofri

Write a dialogue between the article of the author you read for today and Jamison and post it.  You can write in a block in your post or write in a separate doc and upload to the post.  Directions:

  1. Write the first author’s last name followed by a colon. Then either quote or imagine what they might say.
  2. Write the other author’s last name follow by a colon and have them respond to what the first author said as if they are having a conversation. Again, use a quote or make it up.
  3. Follow this same procedure so that you have a transcript of their conversation that includes 3 or 4 exchanges.
  4. Use at least one quote from each author.
  5. It may help to think of a setting where they might encounter each other.

Setting is in a hospital where Danielle is a doctor and Jamison is a concerned citizen.

Ofri: “How can I help you today?”

Jamison: Hi I am not here for me but for a friend, I am very concerned about people with Morgellons disease and I am not sure as to how I can help.

Ofri: Ok can you tell me more about these patients?

Jamison: They all seem to have pain and I don’t understand where it comes from, I cannot see the things they talk about so I am not sure as to where it comes from.

Ofri: With these types of patients the best thing you can do is offer empathy.

Jamison: “Is it wrong to call empathy when you trust the fact of suffering, but not the source? How do I inhabit someone’s pain without having their particular understanding of that pain”

Ofri: “Trying to identify which pains might be helped with ice packs, which might be helped with local heat and massage, which might best be treated with physical therapy, and which might respond to pain medications.” These are the best medical ways to deal with this however empathy is hard to give someone you cannot relate to. I would say the best thing to do would be offer sympathy but exclude the pity and be positive and reinforce your sympathy.

Jamison: Great thank you so much for hearing me out!
