QCQ for Participation Power

Quotation (with page number or parag number or time stamp if video/audio)

“In the world of digitally networked publics, online participation- if you know how to do it- can translate to real power.”

“Life is a performance, online and face-to-face. Who doesn’t behave differently in front of their parents, boss, drinking buddies, Facebook friends, or World of Warcraft guild? Decades before the Internet enabled middle aged men to pretend to be teenage girls online, Goffman looked at the role-playing inherent in everyday interactions.”

Comment (250-500 words)

I chose both of these quotes because they both piqued my interest. The first quote talks about how to use the internet for power and to promote ideas and the second quote shows another way to use the internet, as a troll or someone who pretends to be someone they are not. The first quote talks about how if you know how to use the internet, you can have power. The context surrounding this quote says that you can only have power if you share it with others and how you need people to click the link to what you put up in order to have power. Someone can gain a massive amount of followers for what they post online, this article mainly talks about using blogs for this however in today’s world it is instagram and tiktok that dominate the internet. A person’s power now comes from if they have an attractive body or interesting life on instagram or they are able to post funny videos that people would continue to watch as they mindlessly scroll through tiktok. The power to make people believe on the internet is not as present in blog posts as it is on other social media platforms. For the second quote, I can relate to the part about life being a performance. I have noticed others act differently towards different people in their lives, especially online. People make trolling accounts and other accounts in order to be mean or rude to others in comment sections, a place like reddit is full of people who don’t share they identity but may spread false information.
